YouTube Shorts monetisation

Shorts can earn money, but the rules change and the figures that get passed around are often wrong or out of date. Here are the principles, and where to check the exact terms.

Are YouTube Shorts monetised?

Yes, Shorts can earn revenue for channels accepted into the YouTube Partner Program. Ad revenue sharing on Shorts works differently from long-form videos.

The entry requirements (subscriber, view or watch-time thresholds) have changed several times. We don't copy them here so we don't hand you an outdated number: check the Partner Program page in YouTube Help.

Where do I find the current official rules?

Three places count, all on YouTube's own pages:

  • YouTube Help, YouTube Partner Program section (eligibility);
  • the YouTube channel monetisation policies (reused content, original content);
  • the Earn tab in YouTube Studio, which shows your progress towards eligibility.

Are Shorts cut from my long videos original content?

Yes, if they're your own videos. YouTube's rules mostly target other creators' content reused without adding anything; cutting your own video into Shorts is still your content.

If you clip someone else's video, even with permission, check the reused content rules. Rights questions are covered in reposting a YouTube video on TikTok.

Do Shorts help a channel beyond direct revenue?

Often, yes: a Short can introduce your channel to viewers who wouldn't have clicked on a long video. YouTube lets you link a Short to a long video on your channel to send them there.

That's why many creators cut every long video into several Shorts: see a YouTube video into Shorts.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a Short earn?

There's no fixed amount: it depends on viewers' countries, ads and YouTube's sharing rules. Be wary of figures quoted without a source.

Is there a minimum subscriber count?

Yes, the Partner Program has entry thresholds, and they've changed before. Check them in YouTube Help or the Earn tab of YouTube Studio.

Can music block a Short's monetisation?

Copyrighted music can trigger a claim and cost you the video's revenue. Check the licence of any track in your passages.

Does Clipotte take a cut of my earnings?

No. You pay once for the processed video, and that's it.
