Reposting a YouTube video on TikTok: what's allowed

Cutting a YouTube video into TikTok clips is easy technically. The real question is elsewhere: are you allowed to? Here are the common cases, in plain English.

Can I repost my own YouTube videos on TikTok?

Yes, if you made the video and hold the rights to everything in it. It's the simplest case: you're reusing your own work on another platform.

With Clipotte, you download the file from YouTube Studio and pull vertical clips from it, as explained in a YouTube video into TikToks.

Can I clip another creator's video?

Not without their permission. A video published on YouTube is still protected by copyright: cutting and reposting it without permission can get it taken down and put your account at risk.

Some creators openly allow clipping of their videos, sometimes with specific rules. Ask, keep the agreement in writing and follow its terms. Clipotte is built for your own videos or ones you have the right to use.

What about the music in my video?

This is the most common trap. Music licensed for YouTube isn't necessarily licensed for TikTok or Instagram: the licence depends on where you post.

If your video has music you're unsure about, check its licence before reposting, or pick passages where it doesn't play. Game music raises the same question: see gaming clips.

What about people who appear in my video?

A guest who agreed to appear in your YouTube video hasn't necessarily agreed to be clipped on other networks. For a podcast or interview, build it into your release from the start.

For passers-by filmed in the street, Clipotte's blur option (+€3) detects and tracks faces and licence plates. It isn't foolproof: check every track before posting.

Who owns the clips made with Clipotte?

You do, as long as you hold the rights to the original video, including for commercial use. Clipotte claims no rights over your clips and doesn't post them anywhere.

On retention: your source video is deleted 30 days after upload, clips 90 days after creation. If you're clipping with Shorts monetisation in mind, originality matters for platform rules too.

Frequently asked questions

Is crediting the source enough to repost someone's video?

No. Crediting the creator is polite, but it doesn't replace their permission.

What happens if there's a claim?

Each platform has its own process: takedown, warning, even account penalties. Read their copyright rules.

Is this legal advice?

No, it's a summary of common principles, and rules such as fair use vary by country. For a specific case (commercial use, a guest contract), ask a lawyer.

Does Clipotte check rights?

No, it's up to you to make sure you hold the rights to the uploaded video, as the terms of use state.
