How much does Speechify cost?
Before you subscribe to Speechify, here is its price as shown on its official pricing page, what the same listening costs elsewhere, and the cases where Speechify is still the better choice.
Does Speechify have a free plan?
Yes, but it is limited to basic voices, according to the same official page. The more natural voices, which are the main reason people choose Speechify, are kept for the paid plan.
So the free plan lets you try the tool and see how it works, rather than listen for long stretches in a pleasant voice.
How much does the same listening cost with Readotte?
To listen to a PDF or an article for a few hours a month, Readotte costs nothing or €3.99 a month. Free listening, with no account, goes up to about 10 minutes a day; beyond that, Readotte Plus removes the daily limit within a fair use of about 20 hours of listening a month, and adds MP3 download.
Readotte Plus has no commitment: you stop the renewal in one click from your account, and the plan stays active until the end of the month you paid for. The price is in euros, VAT included, so the amount on a US card depends on your bank's exchange rate and fees.

What extra do you get with Speechify for that price?
Speechify offers mobile apps, a browser extension and the reading of printed pages you photograph, which Readotte does not have. It also offers many more voices and languages than Readotte's 10 English and French voices.
Readotte works only in the web browser, on a computer or a phone, and does not read scanned PDFs: it needs a PDF with selectable text, an article link or pasted text.
When is Speechify worth $29 a month?
Speechify is worth its price if you really use what Readotte lacks: languages beyond English and French, a mobile app, an extension that reads any page in one click, or paper documents you photograph. In those cases, a browser tool limited to text will not replace it.
