Grainy old photo: clean up grain, noise and JPEG blocks
Fast film printed small, an early scan saved at low quality, a photo forwarded around a family group chat until it falls apart: grain and compression blocks muddy the picture. Souvenotte cleans them up while doubling the image size, then rebuilds the faces. The trade-off: very fine detail can be smoothed along with the grain.

How to digitise a grainy photo
- Use the original file
Photos sent through messaging apps are often recompressed every time they are shared. Ask for the original file or scan rather than a screenshot.
- Textured paper: soft light
Some prints use a textured or silk-finish paper whose surface looks like grain. Soft, front-on light, or a flatbed scanner, avoids exaggerating it.
- No noise filter beforehand
App noise reduction often leaves a painted look the restoration can't undo. Let the tool do the cleaning.
Steps for a grainy photo
- 1. Find the best file The original, the first scan, or a fresh one: the least compressed you can get.
- 2. Upload JPG, PNG or WebP. Grain, noise and JPEG blocks are cleaned during the ×2 enlargement.
- 3. Zoom into the preview Compare before/after on a flat area (sky, wall), then on fine detail (hair, lace).
- 4. Keep it HD without watermark for €1.99, or €9.99 for 10 if you have a whole batch of scans.
Grainy photos: what the tool does well, and what it misses
- Good at: grain and noise Film grain and digital noise are cleaned during the ×2 enlargement.
- Good at: JPEG blocks The little squares of an over-compressed file are softened, which helps a lot with photos received by message.
- Worth knowing: fine detail and small text Lace, lettering or a cap badge can be smoothed along with the grain.
- Worth knowing: printing screens A photo cut from a newspaper or book has a dot pattern that may stay visible or form patterns.
Frequently asked questions
Can I keep a bit of grain?
Not in the restoration, which always cleans. For a print, the Studio looks (soft, sepia, black and white) give a more period feel, but they don't add grain back.
My photo came from a family WhatsApp group. Will it work?
Often, yes: compression blocks are softened. You'll get a better result from the original file or a new scan. See what resolution to scan at.
Why is the face cleaner than the rest?
Detected faces get a dedicated rebuild on top of the general clean-up. The background is cleaned, not rebuilt.
How much for a whole grainy album?
