The ideal length of a short

You'll read precise “ideal lengths” everywhere, rarely with a source. The truth is more useful: the right length is however long it takes to deliver on your opening promise, and not a second more.

Is there an ideal length for a short?

No, there's no universal number. What platforms care about most is people watching your clip to the end, and a sloppy 20-second clip gets watched less than a gripping one-minute clip.

So the right length depends on content: a reaction takes a few seconds, an explanation needs longer.

What are the platforms' maximum lengths?

YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels each have a maximum length, and all have changed in recent years. To avoid giving you an outdated number, we don't copy them: check each platform's official help when you post.

Bear in mind that a clip over the limit may be published as a regular video rather than a Short, depending on the platform.

How do I pick a length based on content?

A simple rule: the length follows the opening promise.

Type of momentLength logicClipotte setting
Reaction, punchy line, jokeJust long enough for the punchlineUnder 30 s

How do I shorten a clip that's too long?

Trim the intro first: most overlong clips are too long at the start, not the end. Open on the strong line, as explained in the hook of a short video.

Then remove repetition and tangents. In Clipotte's editor, you do this by deleting words from the transcript, and the video follows.

How does Clipotte handle clip length?

You pick a range before processing: auto (20 to 90 seconds), under 30 seconds, 30-60, 60-90 seconds, or 90 seconds to 3 minutes. The AI looks for complete passages within that range, and the code checks length down to the word.

If unsure, stick with auto. For specific uses, see course clips or the TikTok video format.

Frequently asked questions

Is shorter always better?

No. A clip cut before its conclusion frustrates viewers. Slightly longer and complete beats short and unfinished.

Should all my clips be the same length?

No, vary with the content. Clipotte's auto setting suggests different lengths for different moments.

Do platform analytics help?

Yes: average watch time and how many people watch to the end tell you whether your clips run long.

Can I lengthen a clip the AI picked?

Yes, in the editor you can restore words at the start or end of the passage.
